Sir James Paul McCartney was born James Paul McCartney better known as Paul McCartney. Paul's father James McCartney was a Protestant cotton salesman for A. Hannay Co., and led Jim Mac's Jazz Band at night. His mother Mary Patricia McCartney was a Catholic midwife and was the major bread-winner in the family. Paul was born and raised with his brother Michael, in Liverpool, England. Paul saw tragedy at the age of fourteen, when his mother succumbed to breast cancer. After his mother passed away losing her battle with breast cancer, Paul asked his father to buy him a guitar. His father was thrilled that his son was also interested in music, and purchased him his first guitar. Since Paul was left-handed, he had to figure out how to invert the order of the cords. Paul and Michael both took piano lessons growing up as youths, but neither stuck with it.

Soon enough, he joined the Quarry Men Skiffle Group in 1957, consisting of at the time John Lennon, 1940-80, guitar, keyboards, vocals, Paul McCartney, bass guitar, vocals, George Harrison, 1943-2001, lead guitar, sitar, vocals, and Pete Best, drums. In 1962 Pete was replaced by Richard "Ringo Starr" Starkey. The group of young men eventually transformed into The Beatles. The rest, of course, is history.

Following his marriage to Linda Eastman in March of 1969, Paul began working at his home studio on his first solo album. After record-breaking sales and smash hits, frankly too many to mention by name, also worldwide tours and three successful feature films, the Beatles disbanded in 1970 and each member pursued a solo career in music.

Within a year after the Beatles' breakup, Paul had formed the band Wings and made his debut as a soloist with his self-titled album that also featured Linda McCartney on keyboardist and as backup vocalist, Denny Laine and having expanded the line-up to include drummer Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough, guitarist. The group remained active for the next ten years, adding and subtracting members like math all the while racking up a multitude of number one hit albums, singles, and tours.

By 1978 Paul had written or co-written 43 songs that sold over a million copies each. In 1979 he was declared the most successful composer of all time. Paul released his second self-titled album, McCartney II in 1980 and Wings went their own way a year later.

In 1982 Paul recorded an international hit with Stevie Wonder, Ebony and Ivory. Paul's music attracted numerous Grammy awards, nine number one singles and seven number one albums during the first 12 years of his solo career.

The rest of the 80s were marked with a memorable performances and much success. Just in time for a new decade, Paul formed yet another band again with wife Linda, with all new members. During 1989-1990 Paul staged a major, year-long world tour, in which for the first time he included a substantial number of Beatles songs in the set list. The tour was a big success, filling arenas and stadiums at each stop. In 1994, Paul, George, and Ringo reunited to release the first of the Beatles' Anthology albums, consisting of alternate takes and live recordings of Beatles songs; volumes two and three were released the next year. In 1995 Paul dabbled in Photo film, a short film based on the Linda's photographic work. By the year 1998 Paul was be honored with prestigious awards for his body of work with awards and tragedy struck yet again for the second time in his life. In April 1998, Linda McCartney whom he remained happily married to for 30 years died after a three-year struggle with breast cancer. Paul and Linda had three children: Mary, Stella, and James. He also adopted Heather, Linda's daughter from her previous marriage.

Although shattered by the loss of his beloved wife, grieving Paul continued to release albums, such as 1999's Run Devil Run and the classical album Working Classical.

Paul has been honored in so many ways, from humanitarian honors to being inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall as a solo artist. He was also knighted in 1997 by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and was subsequently known as Sir Paul McCartney. Paul met Heather Mills in 1999, the two later married and had their first child a baby girl, Beatrice Milly McCartney in 2003.

Having spawned four decades of music history, Paul may have been inspired by the original King of Rock n' Roll, Elvis Presley, but the singer, songwriter and humanitarian can be considered as close to royalty as they come.

Paul continues to release pop albums. In 2002 he launched another major American tour, with an energetic band and a varied show that appealed to fans of all generations. This leg became the top-grossing U.S. tour of the year, taking in over $126 million. The tour subsequently continued around the rest of the world in 2003 and 2004.

In February 2005 Paul was asked to perform during halftime at the Super Bowl XXXIX. His new album, tentatively titled Timelines, is due to be released in August 2005, with a tour to follow.

Although Paul has pursued several outside projects during this tenure his passion has always been the sweet sound of music. Music has been his claim to "FAME" for this musical icon.
